We tried so hard to get them to perfectly pose together. You would think that after 17 months we would have accepted that the perfectly posed picture of them together is hard to come by. So we made due with these!

Mommy Drinks Because I Cry

IMG_7368

I am normally not one for crude humor on children’s t-shirts. If you would like some examples basically just go to the “Baby” section of the Spencer’s Gift web site. Some of those things are unbelievably vulgar. The closest thing I have to raunchy for a kids t-shirt is “That’s What She Said.”

And while we are on the subject, now that I have a daughter, I find the “Lock Up Your Daughter” shirts to also be offensive. “Why would I want to lock up my daughter? Is she not capable of making her own decisions? Is she not safe from you? Why don’t I just lock you up instead? How would you like that?”

But I found this t-shirt at the thrift store back when Canyon was a baby and just couldn’t resist. I don’t think I ever got a photo of Canyon in it but Raven was happy to model for me.

And no sweetie, Mommy doesn’t drink because you cry. Mommy drinks because this new Crown Royal Maple Finished Whiskey is delicious!

Exploratorium!

1.4.13

Exploritorium!

Our family loves the Exploritorium in Skokie and we love a bargain. That means we usually only go during the Buy One Get One Free Happy Hour which is Friday’s from 3pm-5pm. While we are at home I always say I want us to be there right at 3pm, so we can play for the full two hours and get our money’s worth. And then we are always running late and I start to freak out in the van, complaining that the kids are missing out on play time. When we finally get there at 3:45pm I am annoyed that we have missed out on 45 minutes of fun. By 4:10pm I am already exhausted and overwhelmed by the noise and activity and can’t wait till it’s 5pm and they kick us out!

River and Raven love the giant lite bright!

IMG_6752

It seems like just yesterday that the twins were so small and relegated to spending their time in the toddler play area or by the light board. Now they are so independent that they go all over.

They spent some time at the coloring table…

IMG_6762

Raven has become very social, making new friends.

IMG_6778

And this was the first trip where they discovered the water play area!

Canyon has his ducks in a row…

IMG_9554

We have this same rocket in the back yard but River never wanted to play on it. Now she loves it!

IMG_9555

They close at 5pm and we played until the last possible minute. John grabbed River and Raven and I said I would lure Canyon out and meet him at the van. Canyon had other ideas. And raced for the giant climbing structure and disappeared inside! The staff is extremely chill and just kept cleaning up while he played. Finally I decided I better try to get him out.

Here’s a bit of video of me trying to get him to come down from this three-story climbing structure.

In the end we had about 15 extra minutes of play time. That boy sure knows how to get his moneys worth!!!

Twenty Eight Degrees and Happy

1.3.13 Cold, snowy but Canyon, Lilo and I still needed to get out of the house. So we bundled up and headed for the lakeshore. First stop-Montrose Beach!

Canyon was very disappointed that the water showers were not working!

IMG_6394

Lilo was so darn happy to be out of the house and running wild and free!

IMG_6400

Canyon got half way down the beach when he decided that he was done and wanted to go back to the van. I was a bit disappointed, but there was no point ruining the day with trying to drag him through the sand so we went with it. Back to the van and over to the harbor where we warmed up and watched a flock of seagulls chow down on a bag of goodies and elderly couple dropped off for them.

IMG_9313

We like seagulls.

IMG_9321

Now that we were warm I decided to cruise the playground to see if Canyon was up for running around some more. And he was! Of course he didn’t want to wear his hat at first, even though it was about 28 degrees!

IMG_9436

IMG_9437

I am not sure if it was me or the cold, but something convinced him to put his hat on.

IMG_9427

Blissed out Lilo…

IMG_6499

Happy us!

IMG_9429

My attempt at getting all three of us into a picture…

Me & my Lilo!

IMG_9431

Canyon finally decided he was cold so we headed back to the van for treats while I drove over to Foster Beach to say hi to some of my favorite lake front trees…

Called John before we left so that when we arrived home there was warm mac and cheese, veggies and panko crusted chicken breasts waiting for us!

An excellent winter’s day!

New Year’s Day-Thrifting And Grilling

New Year’s Day was a good start for the year. I woke up and headed over to the neighbor’s for some quality time with the kitties. I hung out for a little longer than planned since Bebe and Hamlet were in the mood for some love. Plus the morning sun was shining in and the house was quiet and peaceful-which my house is not. So I played with the cats and tried to psych myself up for making a fancy waffle feast for the family to kick off the new year. Finally headed back across the alley and opened our door and was hit with the delicious smell of bacon! John surprised me with making scrambled eggs, bacon and toast! No, it was not the fancy feast I had planned but it was even better because I didn’t have to anything besides butter the toast!

After breakfast I headed out into the world for the 60% off sale at the thrift store. The sun was super bright and Raven had busted just about every pair of my sunglasses so I was forced to pull out the shades I have for road trips. I like to pretend I am a bad ass on long drives so I have these shades for just that purpose. When I put them on in real life I felt like a cross between a state trooper and my Dad!

IMG_9217

When I posted that photo on Facebook my step-mom confirmed my impression, “They look just like your Dad’s !!!!! You better buy some new ones.” (side bar. it’s the 26th and I still haven’t bothered to get new ones!)

It was a great day of thrifting. But a bad day to be a Barbie.

IMG_9215

IMG_9216

Home to show off my purchases and hang with my little rock star. I brought up a tub of Canyon’s old clothes and it made me happy to see some of my favorites, like this The Who shirt.

IMG_9179

IMG_9193

For dinner it was time to head out into the cold for my New Year’s Day tradition of grilling outside, no matter how cold.

IMG_9163

And before bed it was time for stories. Tasty, tasty stories.

Feel Free To Eat The Gingerbread House

Jan 1

Over the holidays our one commitment was cat sitting for our neighbor. Her cats are a joy to hang out with and she left treats for us to munch on during our visits. Not a bad deal!

Happy New Year

I often feel like we make the most out of average days but big holidays we kind of let slide.

Case in point. New Year’s Eve. The first time in years neither one of us had to work on NYE and we pretty much ignored it. Until about 11:50pm where we put on some festive head gear and went through the motions of ringing in the new year.

Canyon Gets A Mack

December 28

Canyon still had his “best” present under the tree on December 28. We usually buy toys from thrift stores, rummage sales or Craigslist but this one was new thanks to Grandpa Jay, Grandma Mary and the Target clearance aisle. A Mack play set from “Cars”!

He loved it so much that he napped with it!
