Colorful Earns Me An Honorable Mention!

Every week I think about entering the Red Eye photo challenge and then miss the deadline. But on Wednesday I remembered at 11:50am which gave me ten minutes to figure out what to send for the theme of “Colorful”. Canyon and his tie dye’s came to mind…

And with three minutes to spare I earned an honorable mention!

See here…

My inspiration for entering is always my friend Brighid from Oz Images Photography. She places in the contest almost every week and will take home the top honor one of these days!

I think it’s interesting that Brighid points out that she asked her husband to help her narrow down her entry to one photo. I entered two, and I actually liked the other one more but you never know what others will prefer. That’s the challenge of writing and photography-and well I guess any creative outlet. You just never know what people will like. Here’s my other entry…

I actually just ordered that one in a giant 16×40 canvas from Canvas on Demand and it arrived yesterday. It literally takes me breath away and I can’t wait to hang it on the wall.

Now next week is Black and White. I am going to challenge myself to take a fresh photo for this theme…I’ll keep you posted!

Bird Bath Boy

Now before anyone gets too grossed out, let me explain that this was the bird baths first day out of the garage and it wasn’t full of bird germs yet…

I’d also like to point out that he has a delightful water play table right behind him but that he found the bird bath to be much more enticing…

But making music with the giant wind chimes is pretty fun too. He also liked splashing with one hand and ringing the chimes with the other!

Then the game took on a whole new level…

So now he is SOAKING wet…

And dirty…

And it’s time to go in for a long bath!

We do a lot of laundry around here.

What the rapture looked like from our house…

“Is it time?”

“Oooh, maybe that’s it!”

“Anyone floating away over here?”

“Nothing yet…”

“Yay! No end of days!”

“Stupid humans.”

Morning In The Forest Preserve

Yesterday I found this clip of Mary Oliver reading “Mornings at Blackwater” and it moved me to tears. I own the book it is from and have read it many times but it was exactly what I needed right now and hearing it in her own precious voice was almost too good.

Then today we ended up on a spontaneous little walk through a forest preserve and I was immediately brought back to the poem when I saw the water.

Mornings at Blackwater

by Mary Oliver

For years, every morning, I drank
from Blackwater Pond.
It was flavored with oak leaves and also, no doubt,
the feet of ducks.

And always it assuaged me
from the dry bowl of the very far past.

What I want to say is
that the past is the past,
and the present is what your life is,
and you are capable
of choosing what that will be,
darling citizen.

So come to the pond,
or the river of your imagination,
or the harbor of your longing,

and put your lips to the world.
And live
your life.

Blessed be.

You Never Know What You’ll See…

Our morning started with a short trip to pick up some perennials from a woman on Freecycle. For those of you who don’t know, Freecycle is this great site where you basically get things for free or give away things for free. I had arranged to meet up with a woman who was giving away plants about 3.5 miles from our house. As we were going out the door John asked why I was grabbing my camera and I said, “you never know.”

We met up with Ronnie at her house out by one of the forest preserves. Her big garden problem? Deer! The deer keep chomping away at all her beautiful plants! I think the idea of deer in my yard is fantastic but I bet I would feel differently if they were dining on all my hard work. She loaded us up with Lambs Ear, Catmint, Ferns, Cone Flowers, Strawberries and so much more! For a plant lover on a budget it was like Christmas!

As we were leaving her house we saw this lovely lady…

Since Lilo was with us we decided to treat her to a little run in the forest preserve. We parked the car and headed into the woods…

Now I know I am not supposed to be walking around but I really, REALLY needed some time in the woods. So John, Canyon and Lilo went off ahead and I took my time shuffling through the spring trails. Then I saw the water down just a slight hill. I rubbed my belly and asked the twins if could please, pretty please, take a little walk down the trail. They agreed so down we went. So peaceful, so green and so what I needed.

Now I am ashamed to say that I was so busy taking pictures of the trees that I totally missed this little fawn until John caught up to me and pointed her/him out!

Now the middle of a flooded forest seems like an odd place for a little baby deer to be sleeping but maybe it felt really safe there.

I was so happy I had my camera but it was just the 35mm lens so no zoom, but I did what I could between that and my iPhone…

Canyon was great on the trails, climbing over stumps and sticks, taking time to play in a tree…

On our way home we scooped up a few of the $1 Groupon deals that were offered today for some Afghan food and Middle Eastern Sweets. A little neighborly plant sharing, some forest time and big city ethnic dining. Perfect Friday morning!
