Little Monster

Oh my new joy. Making little videos that combine my love of Canyon, photography and music. This one is a little long but I love the song and I love the images from today.

Playground

Canyon, Lilo and I went for walk down by the lake. We were driving around, looking for a good spot to start and saw the playground by Lawrence Ave. The last time I was there was with my niece and nephews when they were little-so probably ten years ago! It was the perfect day for it. Just cold enough that no one else was there so Canyon could run around, Lilo could chase the ball and I could play on the swings.

I like to swing. And these were great swings. At first I was wondering why the ground beneath each swing was scooped out into deep hollows. I figured it was from people dragging their feet, but they seemed abnormally deep. Just a few leg pumps and I was flying! Super high, super fast! It was so fun. Until Canyon saw me and decided to walk over. I realized that if I didn’t stop fast I was going to totally kick my poor kid! I pointed my legs down, stretching out my toes to stop-digging even deeper into the mulch. That’s why the holes were so big-those swings were hard to slow down! Luckily Canyon lost interest before we collided and we moved on to the safer area-the slides!

Wouldn’t Canyon be a great Baby Gap model? He’s wearing his stylish Baby Gap corduroy coat ($2 thrift store) and his adorable Baby Gap hat ($1 rummage sale). No, I did not enter him into the casting call contest. I hate those “you only win if you get a million of your friends to vote every day for 6 weeks” kind of things.

I love this expression…

“Autumn wins you best by this, its mute Appeal to sympathy for its decay.”- Robert Browning Hamilton

The park was bursting with robins. It was like a robin convention. Like they were all getting together for one last Chicago fling before heading down south. A pre-migration bash.

I did not have the right lens to properly capture them so we will have to settle for leaves. Lots and lots of leaves.

“Bittersweet October. The mellow, messy, leaf-kicking, perfect pause between the opposing miseries of summer and winter.” – Carol Bishop Hipps

Saturday was supposed to be a morning jam packed with Halloween festivals before John headed in to work. But it was rainy and kind of icky so we grudgingly gave up the plans. Just as I was settling in on the internet Lilo made it very clear that staying home was not an option. She was right. It may not have been the day I was expecting but it was a day none the less.

Off to Horner Park!

So I love my little man. He has finally got the hang of this walking thing and is picking up speed. I use to obsess about how he was behind schedule with walking. Now I am grateful for all the extra time I had before he was racing away!

Chicago International Children’s Film Festival

This summer I was asked to be a part of the Adult Jury for the Chicago International Children’s Film Festival. I had served two years ago and thought it would be fun to do it again. So for 5 or 6 weeks I spent my Thursday evenings watching and evaluating documentary films. It was a lot of screen time but fun!

So now it’s time for the actual event and we went to the opening night gala on Friday. Fun food, music and then a presentation to kick off the festival.

They showed a few shorts and Canyon and I liked these two…

“Log Jam”. I now know there are a whole series of these and they totally crack me up!

And you can’t go wrong with BB King…

We couldn’t stay for all the films since Canyon was ready to go. As we were leaving the caterer’s were packing up and they gave Canyon the big bouquet of balloons. They were cool balloons, too cool to just get shoved in the car and driven home to die a slow, leaky death in our living room. So we put some more money in the meter, grabbed the stroller and headed down to Michigan Avenue.

Full moon, balloons and a whole lotta tourists. People took our picture because we were so cute. We took our own pictures…

We shared an ice cream cone at Ghirardelli and then headed back to the car.

This is kind of creepy…
